What Is a Sex Counselor?

Why Work With a Sex Counselor?

A sex counselor is a trained professional who helps people find solutions to sex related woes. Sex counselors solve problems such as sexless marriage, low libido, and sexual dysfunction, but also guide their clients to fully grasp their sexual potential through education, training and open communication.

Society tells us that we are supposed to naturally know how to have sex. The desire to have sex is natural (pleasure is our birthright), but the skills to be a fabulous lover (to ourselves & others) aren’t. The truth is that people need to learn how to have great sex.

Since sex is something that is often shamed in our culture, talking about it or giving explicit instruction still remains pretty rare. A few of us will meet a ‘teacher in the sheets’, but what does that mean for the rest of us? Or maybe you’re fresh out of a long term relationship & want to learn about yourself again. Or your years into a beautiful relationship that could use some passion.

This is where working with a good sex counselor can be magical. Sex is learnable and teachable (without being rehearsed & rigid). The best way to learn about it is to get feedback from an experienced, non-judgmental and supportive person.

What Kinds of Sex Counselors Are There?

Depending on your personality, your intentions & overall sexual interests, you may be drawn to a particular approach as there are many different kinds. Here are the 3 main types:

Talk

During talk counseling sessions, a sex counselor asks you about your challenges and goals. They then give you suggestions for improvement, as well as book and video recommendations.

Experiential

The other type of counseling is experiential sex counseling. In this method, your counselor will teach you how to be a better lover through talking, experiential, and sometimes, hands-on touch practices. Experiential practices might include breathwork, how to emit and share sexual energy, and how to verbally seduce a partner.

Hands-On

Hands-on touch practices may include understanding what touch feels good to you or maybe you want more clarity on consent practices.
